Comics, Macs, RAID, Linux, Gentoo, some science and a dash of atheism. No longer a wet lab molecular biologist, I now work for MacVector, Inc.

Google Desktop goes Linux | CNET News.com
This is a good sign, and I applaud Google. However, in the same way that it’s pointless on OSX when you have Spotlight, it’s pointless on Google when you have Beagle!!! Still top marks to Google!!
How to clean old binary logs
Here’s a little quick tip on cleaning your MythTV box of space cluttering binary logs. These are generated for every transaction that Mysql does. So if you have any corruption you can redo the tables. However, if you have a lot of listings data being imported into the table, then these can be pretty large.
mysql -u root --password mythconverg
Enter password:
Reading table information for completion of table and column names
You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 53 to server version: 4.1.21-log
Type ‘help;’ or ‘\h’ for help. Type ‘\c’ to clear the buffer.
mysql> show master logs;

I dislike the Daily Mail and all the middle class tabloids of its ilk, but for once here’s an interesting article spotted on BoingBoing, on the DM’s website. Regarding the changes in the amount of area that 4 generations of 8 yr old hildren could roam.
How children lost the right to roam in four generations | the Daily Mail
However, it upsets me that they do not see the hypocrisy in this article. It is papers like these that maintain the hysteria regarding paedo’s on the hunt for your child. Research seems to show that it is far more likely that a child is abused by a member of their family. However, whenever a child is attacked by some wretched creature, or some knee jerk legislation is discussed, it is papers like this that give it publicity. They must take some responsibility for the hysteria they generate. It is this hysteria that then makes mothers and fathers too scared to let their little darlings out of their sight. Of course the child then grows up scared of the outside world.
Anybody who preys on children is not worthy of oxygen, and should spend the rest of their lives locked away. They may be ill, but a type of sickness such as this should never be allowed to roam. However, their intended prey should be allowed to roam. As a child I had the freedom of the world around me. The children of today do not. I doubt whether they are more at risk than I was. This must be detrimental to them.
StorageMojo » Apple’s touchless file system conversion patent
Spotted on the ever interesting Storagemojo’s blog, a patent that both makes it more credible that Leopard will at some point be on ZFS, and also is just an pretty incredible idea. A conversion of a file system to another without backup? Wow!!
Bloody hell. What on earth have Apple done? I do not like this revamp. I always liked the old Apple site. It was clean and loaded quickly! Well quick apart from those Leopard adverts..!
Thanks to Raj for this interesting (quite sad) article.
I do feel sorry for the young of today. Ok when I was younger we also hung around on corners, and generally did nothing. But we did it with style. Well I used to think we did. The young of today have such potential, look at the way technology is advancing. In my lifetime so far we’ve gone from Pong to Second Life. Postcards to FaceBook. Kids now are born with a mobile in their hands, yet they have much less opportunity. Where did it go wrong? Who’s to blame, and more importantly who will pay? youth is wasted on the young, it is true, but the old are not around to see the mess they create!
Slashdot | Sun CEO Says ZFS Will Be ‘the File System’ for OSX
Being pretty interested in RAID and Macs, I find this very interesting. ZFS sounds like a pretty neat piece of work. Being able to transparently add dives for more space, and determine which parts of the filesystem need more performance, ro more redundancy. sounds pretty nifty to me.
