How children lost the right to roam in four generations | the Daily Mail

I dislike the Daily Mail and all the middle class tabloids of its ilk, but for once here’s an interesting article spotted on BoingBoing, on the DM’s website. Regarding the changes in the amount of area that 4 generations of 8 yr old hildren could roam.

However, it upsets me that they do not see the hypocrisy in this article.  It is papers like these that maintain the hysteria regarding paedo’s on the hunt for your child. Research seems to show that it is far more likely that a child is abused by a member of their family. However, whenever a child is attacked by some wretched creature, or some knee jerk legislation is discussed, it is papers like this that give it publicity.  They must take some responsibility for the hysteria they generate. It is this hysteria that then makes mothers and fathers too scared to let their little darlings out of their sight. Of course the child then grows up scared of the outside world.

Anybody who preys on children is not worthy of oxygen, and should spend the rest of their lives locked away.  They may be ill, but a type of sickness such as this should never be allowed to roam. However, their intended prey should be allowed to roam.  As a child I had the freedom of the world around me. The children of today do not. I doubt whether they are more at risk than I was.  This must be detrimental to them.

  1. Its that whole culture of fear thing. Its far easier for the media to prey on peoples insecurities than it is to come up something positive or do any actual in-depth investigative reporting.
